March 12, 2000:After doing business in the Arcade, on Court Street and on the Internet, the Flour Sack gourmet foods store has opened in the Globe Mall, Court Street. The Flour Sack sells high-end sauces, marinades, preserves, spreads, baking mixes, oils, vinegars and, by order, chocolates.

March 12, 1985:Historic considerations will carry weight in the design of a possible post office on Public Square, but won't necessarily affect the proposed building of a hotel and three-story commercial building on the square, said Julia S. Stokes, state Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation. Plans will be reviewed for a post office on the triangle bounded by Franklin and State streets.

March 12, 1960:Rep. Clarence E. Kilburn, R-Malone, revealed a National Park Service recommendation that New York state put 19.6 miles of Lake Ontario shoreline into parks. The recommendation covers 9,530 acres in the Jefferson-Oswego County area.

75 years ago

March 12, 1935:The Federal Surplus Corp. has aroused the ire of farmers by the confusing manner in which potato and cheese shipments are handled. Eight carloads of potatoes have been shipped to Jefferson County from Marcellus and Maine despite the fact that Jefferson County producers have thousands of bushels stored because they cannot sell them.

March 12, 1910:Mrs. Marcia Harbottle, one of the oldest residents of the city, celebrated her 83rd birthday at her home on State Street. She was presented 83 carnations. She came to Watertown in its village days from Frankfort, now Herkimer, by stage in 1847.

125 years ago

March 12, 1885:A cry of murder rang out from an attorney's office on the Square. The tenants rushed to the scene to find the attorney, his partner and an unfortunate citizen tumbling over a steam heater. The struggle was to gain possession of a legal document.
