LYONS FALLS — Matilda (Tilly) Elmer, 98, a native of Lyons Falls, died March 11, 2010 at Lewis County General Hospital.
Mrs. Elmer was a cashier at Market Basket, Victory, and Great American stores, all of Lyons Falls, retiring in 1970.
She attended Greig United Methodist Church and enjoyed embroidery and baking, and caring for her family.
Mrs. Elmer was born February 19, 1912 in Lowville, NY. She was the daughter of Maurice and Bertha Hyers and attended local schools.
She married Charles (Hugh) Stewart in May of 1930. He died as a result of a mill accident at Gould Paper Co., Lyons Falls in 1938. The couple had three daughters. She married Edward Elmer in 1942. He died in 1970.
Surviving are two daughters and their husbands, Jean and Robert Sturtz, Watertown, NY and Shirley and William Knapp, Brantingham, NY, a son-in-law, Robert Marmon, Long Island, NY, twelve grandchildren, seventeen great grandchildren, three great great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her parents, two sisters, Lamoine Lamphere and Minnie Bartolette and a daughter, Bertha Marmon, died before her.
Calling hours will be held on Monday, March 15, 2010 from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. at Callaghan Funeral Home, in Port Leyden, NY with a service immediately following officiated by Rev. Billie Jean Milton. Interment will be in Wildwood Cemetery, Lyons Falls at a later date.
