POTSDAM — Professor Andrews, 90, formerly of 1 Somerset Rd in Potsdam, died on Thursday, March 11, 2010.
He was born on January 21, 1920 in Norwich CT, the son of Alma Rich and Luther Andrews. He attended high school at Norwich Free Academy and then obtained his Bachelor of Arts degree in chemistry from the University of Connecticut in 1942 and later a Masters of Science from the same university in 1944.
A veteran of service in the U.S. Navy from 1944-46, he was an instructor in aviation electronics for the Fleet Airborne Electronics Training unit in the Atlantic area. Following WWII, Mr. Andrews returned to the University of Connecticut as an instructor in chemistry and served as chair of the Fort Trumbull branch chemistry department. He joined Clarkson College of Technology (Clarkson University) in 1952 where he taught chemistry until his retirement in 1985.
He is survived by a stepson, Dr. W. James Bover of Scotch Plains, New Jersey and a beloved friend, Betty Ramming of South Colton, New York.
Through out his years at Clarkson, Mr. Andrews was renowned as an outstanding and dedicated teacher of analytical chemistry affecting of the lives of innumerable students. He also served as advisor to campus fraternities including Theta Xi and Alpha Epsilon Pi.
Visitation will be Sunday, March 14 from 2:00-4:00 p.m. and 6:00-8:00 p.m. at the Garner Funeral Home and a funeral service will be held Monday, March 15 at 10:00 a.m. also at the Garner Funeral Home.
