LOWVILLE — A funeral mass for Nellie C. Pate, 106, will be said on Wednesday, March 17, 2010 at 11:00 A.M. at St. Stephen's Catholic Church, Croghan with Rev. Daniel L. Chapin, Pastor, officiating. Burial will be in St. Stephen's Cemetery.

Mrs. Pate, one of Lewis County's oldest residents, died on Saturday evening, March 13, 2010 at the Lewis County Residential Health Care Facility where she has been a resident on the second floor since April of 2008. Mrs. Pate was a former resident of Valley View Courts.

Born in Indian River on April 18, 1903 the daughter of the late Samuel and Alice Kelley Dekin, after losing her parents at a young age she was raised by her late adopted parents, Charles and Mary Pominville. Nellie went to school in a one room school house in Indian River.

She married Lawrence Pate on August 16, 1922 at St. Stephen's Catholic Church in Croghan. She and Lawrence owned a dairy farm on the Old State Road, Croghan. Mr. Pate died on September 20, 1979

Nellie then went to live in Beaver Falls for a short time on the Cross Road. She moved to Valley View in Lowville on June 1, 1979 where she lived for almost 30 years.

Mrs. Pate was a communicant of St. Stephen's Catholic Church, Croghan, and attended St. Peter's Catholic Church, Lowville.

Nellie loved her bird Pumpkin, whom lived with her, knitting and crocheting, and her word search books.

She is survived by her six children, two sons and daughters-in-law, Gerald and Donna Pate of Castorland; Ronald and Shirley Pate of Deer River; four daughters and a son-in-law, Viola Dutton Croghan; Muriel Nuffer of Castorland; Evelyn Turck of Croghan; and Shirley and Gordon Martin of Castorland; six generations of grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

She is predeceased by her son and daughter-in-law, Earl and Yvonne Pate, three sons-in-law, Wesley Dutton, Darwin Nuffer, and Donald Turck; her grandchildren; a brother Melvin Dekin, two sisters, Emma Hogan, and Grace Schlieder, and two infant sisters.

Mrs. Pate's family would like to thank all second floor nursing home staff and Dr. Lyndaker for all the comfort and care they gave to their Mother.
