GardenShare is offering $5,000 in grants for the creation of school gardens this year as a way to introduce students to growing, eating and sharing healthy food.

Ten grants of $500 each will be awarded to schools that plan and implement a school garden project this summer. Priority will go to projects that connect a school garden with the classroom, the cafeteria and the community.

The grants are open to kindergarten through 12th grade schools in St. Lawrence, Jefferson, Lewis, Franklin, Clinton and Essex counties.

To be eligible, a school representative must attend "Dig In! School and Community Garden Training," which will take place from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. March 30 at St. Lawrence University, Canton. To register for the free public program, visit the upcoming events listing at www.healthquest.get

healthyslc.org, or call 261-4760, ext. 25. Space is limited.

More information about the grant's guidelines and applications will be available at the training.

Funding for the grants comes from Jessica Griffiths and Tim Wennrich in memory of Marianne Wennrich of Canton.
