The state track and field championship meet at Vestal High School concluded Saturday and Norwood-Norfolk's Jon Eng had the top finish of the weekend by an area athlete, taking second place in the Division II 3,000-meter steeplechase and fininshing in eighth place in the Federation.

Eng was in the first of three heats, usually for the slowest athletes in the field, but he dominated his race setting a Section 10 record with a time of of 9 minutes, 44.29 seconds.

Eng talked about his race, and his weekend, as he finished with a total of three medals:

Another top performer this weekend was Indian River senior Andre Green, who finished third in the Division I long jump on Friday and finished fifth in the Federation final Saturday, jumping 21-feet, 6-inches. Here is that jump, which came on his first of three attempts:

Another prominent local athlete, Canton's Matt Pierce, ended his career Saturday with a seventh-place finish in the Division II 1,600-meter run. Pierce will attend NCAA Division I Dartmouth College next season.
