BUFFALO — Watertown's Dustin Pond contributed 11 points as Central defeated Long Island 76-74 at Canisius College, and advanced to today's gold medal game in scholastic men's basketball at the Empire State Games.
M. Taylor Bassett netted 17 points to lead Central, which improved to 3-0. Central will play Hudson Valley for the gold.
In open men's play at Canisius College, Massena's Garrett Sharlow netted seven points to help Adirondack to a 97-89 victory over New York City.
Brian Hamor (Schenectady) led Adirondack to today's bronze medal game with 32 points against New York City.
BASEBALL
After a 2-1, 10-inning victory over Western, Central will play for the scholastic gold medal today.
Game time is set at 11 a.m. today, and Long Island defeated Central, which includes IHC's Anthony Magovney and Dustin Exford, 5-3 Thursday in 10 innings.
ICE HOCKEY
Canton's Trent Durocher registered a goal and an assist for Adirondack, which won 6-3 over Western. Tyler Hynes (Slingerlands) led Adirondack with three goals.
In the second game, Durocher added a goal, and assisted on Hynes's game-winner midway through the third period as Adirondack beat Hudson Valley 2-1. Goalie Joshua Holmes (Massena) notched the win with 23 saves.
SOCCER
Vestal's Robert Hoover connected for three goals as Central played to a 5-5 tie with Hudson Valley in scholastic men's action, and won on penalty kicks.
Central finished the tournament 1-2.
WRESTLING
Gouverneur's Dillon Stowell finished the 106-pound freestyle scholastic tournament 2-1, earning a silver medal at Buffalo State College.
LACROSSE
Central defeated Hudson Valley 16-7 at Canisius College and will meet Long Island in today's gold medal game. Long Island won its semifinal game against New York City, 15-3.
WOMEN
ICE HOCKEY
Kaillie Goodnough (Mannsville) tallied a third-period goal to help Central earn a 2-2 scholastic women's tie with Long Island. Central also tied its second game, 1-1 with New York City.
Also in scholastic play, Norwood goalie Alexandra Stevenson turned away 48 shots, but it wasn't nearly enough as Western dealt Adirondack a 7-0 loss.
Adirondack fired 67 shots against Hudson Valley in its second game of the day, and two got into the net during a 2-2 tie that earned the team the bronze medal.
LACROSSE
Katie Ferris generated four goals and assisted on another as Central clinched a berth in the bronze medal game with a 14-5 win over Hudson Valley in scholastic women's action at Niagara University.
Kailah Kempney had an assist for Central, which plays at 9 this morning against Adirondack for third place.
SOCCER
Erin Felix buried a goal in the 74th minute to lift Hudson Valley to a 1-0 blanking of Central in a scholastic women's soccer game. Central dropped to 1-2.
RIFLE
Leanne Higby of Constableville has captured a pair of gold medals.
Higby, the defending state individual champion in two events, won gold in the individual 3-position and in the individual air rifle. She won her second gold Saturday.
Higby also captured silver in the team air rifle event for the Central Region, combining with Braden Farley. She won bronze in the team 3-position event for the Central Region, teaming with Derick Lederie.
