BUFFALO — Dustin Pond and Adriana Spicer, both of Watertown, each performed well but their Central Region scholastic basketball teams lost in the gold medal games as the 32nd Empire State Games came to a close on Sunday

Pond, who plays for Watertown High School, scored 12 points in the final, but Central couldn't hold on to a 13-point halftime lead as Hudson Valley left with a 92-85 victory.

Central was assessed two technical fouls that slowed its momentum early in the second half. The most costly was to Zack Coleman, who was cited for yelling from the bench. The technical counted for his fifth personal foul, and he finished the game with 15 points.

P.J. Torres scored 35 points for Hudson Valley,

In the women's scholastic final, Immaculate Heart Central's Spicer drained a pair of 3-pointers to finish with six points during a lopsided 99-53 loss to champion Hudson Valley.

Central, which won big on Thursday and Friday, experienced its worst offensive outings on Saturday and Sunday.

In the open men's bronze medal game, Dave Coley registered 23 points to lead Long Island past Adirondack at Canisius College.

Massena's Garrett Sharlow scored eight points for Adirondack, which was paced by Brian Hamor's 35 points.

BASEBALL

Due to inclement weather that hit the Buffalo area Saturday evening, the medal round of the scholastic baseball tournament was not played.

Central, which featured IHC players Anthony Magovney and Dustin Exford, was set to play against Long Island for the gold. But instead Central was awarded the silver based on its 3-2 record. Long Island finished 5-0 in preliminary play. Exford finished the games with one victory on the mound, three hits and two runs batted in.

Western earned the bronze.

LACROSSE

Adirondack defeated Central 11-6 Sunday at Niagara University to capture the bronze medal in the scholastic women's tournament.

Central finished 3-3.

ICE HOCKEY

New York City scored four goals in the first period, and won a scholastic men's game, 5-4, over Adirondack.

Joshua Holmes (Massena) stopped 14 shots for Adirondack, and Trent Durocher scored a goal. Adirondack finished the tournament 2-3.
