ADAMS — Eleanor C. Greene, 92, of 34 Hungerford Avenue, died Wednesday evening at her home while under the care of her family and dedicated caregivers. Her funeral will be 2 p.m. Sunday at the Piddock Funeral Home, Adams, with the Rev. Leon "Toby" Schilling officiating. Burial will be in the Union Cemetery, Adams Center. Calling hours will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. The family requests donations be made to the Adams Center Free Library, 18267 State Route 177, Adams Center, NY 13606 or the Union Cemetery Association, PO Box 212, Adams Center, NY 13606.

Miss Greene is survived by a sister and her husband, Harriet and George FitzGibbon, Johnson City; three nephews and their wives, Dwight and Barb Greene, Adams, Darryl and Kathy Greene, Adams, and Gary and Jeanne FitzGibbon, Annandale, VA; four nieces, Pat FitzGibbon, Acton, Mass., Janna and Carl Bingle, Adams, Deb FitzGibbon, Johnson City, and Judy Greene, Adams Center. Surviving also are several great and great-great nieces and nephews and a sister-in-law, Jeanette Greene, Watertown. She is predeceased by her parents and a brother, Arthur E. "Ted" Greene, who died in 1991.

Miss Greene was born May 19, 1918, in Watertown, daughter of Arthur E. and Alice Pugh Greene. She graduated from Adams Center High School in 1935 and Syracuse University obtaining her B.A. in 1940 and her Master's degree in August of 1950.

She started her teaching career at Adams Center High School in 1943. Many of her former students remember her as their favorite math or French teacher. Miss Greene frequently served as senior class advisor and was invited to many class reunions over the years. She retired in 1980 from teaching at South Jefferson Central School. She lived on the family farm at Talcott Falls until 1973 when she moved to Adams Center and then to her current home in 1997.

Miss Greene was a member of the Adams Village Baptist Church, Delta Kappa Gamma honorary teaching society, New York State Retired Teachers Association, and the Historical Association of South Jefferson. She served as Treasurer of the Adams Center Free Library from 1954 to 1994. She then became a trustee of the library from 1994 to 2005 and received a commendation from the North Country Library System in 2005 for her many years of service. Miss Greene was also a volunteer for over twenty years at Samaritan Medical Center and Samaritan Keep Home. As a member of the Jefferson County Girl Scout Council, she served as a leader, South Neighborhood Chairman, and Day Camp Counselor at Washington Park.

Miss Greene enjoyed traveling abroad with friends and family. She was an avid gardener, both at the "Stone House" and her beloved cabin at Talcott Falls. She shared her homemade doughnuts, pickles and maple syrup with all of her family.
