LOWVILLE — Douglas A. Burkhard, 80, formerly of N. Shore Rd., Brantingham, died Tuesday, August 31, 2010, at the Lewis County Residential Health Care Facility under the care of Lewis County Hospice, where he had resided since March, 2009.
Born October 22, 1929, in Croghan, the son of Alvin and Edna Hewitt Burkhard, he was a 1947 graduate of Fr. Leo Memorial School in Croghan, and later attended Siena College in Loudonville.
He married Patricia Buckingham on November 4, 1950, at St. Stephen's Church in Croghan and was a resident of Croghan for 46 years before moving to Brantinghamin 1976. Mrs. Burkhard died in 1989.
A veteran of the Korean War, he entered the US Army in February, 1951, and served in Korea with the 7th Infantry Division before being honorably discharged as a Sergeant in November, 1952.
He worked for William Burkhard & Son Plumbing and Heating in Croghan from 1947 until 1973, before becoming a teacher of refrigeration trade at Lewis County BOCES in Glenfield until 1976. From 1977 until 1985, he taught at both Herkimer Community College in Herkimer, and Mohawk Valley Community College in Utica. He was then employed at Fort Drum for several years in their heating and air conditioning department before retiring in 1993 to live on the lake in Brantingham.
He was a communicant of St. Stephen's Church in Croghan, for much of his life, and also of St. Mary's Church in Glenfield. He was a life member of both the Beaver River Memorial Post 1663 American Legion in Croghan, and Lowville Elks.
Douglas enjoyed reading, barge rides on the lake, golfing and watching Mass on TV.
Surviving are his 101 year old mother, Edna, a resident of the Lewis County Residential Health Care Facility, Lowville; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Pamela and Gerald Dwyer, of Esperance, NY, Judith Burkhard, of Boonville, and Julie and James McCabe, of Scottsdale, AZ; two sons and daughters-in-law, William and Mary Jo Burkhard, of Beaver Falls, and Michael and Karen Burkhard, of E. Stroudsburg, PA; 11 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.
A Memorial Service will be held on Friday at 12 Noon at Scanlon Funeral Home, Croghan, with the Rev. Daniel Chapin, pastor of St. Stephen's Church, Croghan, officiating. Burial with military honors will be in St. Stephen's Cemetery, Croghan.
There will be no calling hours.
