IHC facing challenges

After a tumultuous offseason in which Immaculate Heart Central was bumped up a class, the Cavaliers are settled into Class C North and are looking forward to competing with bigger schools on a weekly basis.

"We believe every game will be a battle and a good challenge for us to succeed,'' said coach Paul Alteri, who guided IHC to the Class D North title and a spot in the Class D semifinals a year ago. "Every game for us seems like a rivalry game, so it should be a fun and interesting season.''

This IHC squad is very young and short on experience in many areas. But the Cavaliers are athletic and speedy at key skill positions.

Gone is multi-talented quarterback Tom Burgess. In his place, senior Ryan Spicer steps into the starting spot after seeing limited action a year ago.

Alteri is looking for senior running back Kyle Hauk to have a breakout season. He rushed for nearly 800 yards and nine touchdowns a year ago. Junior fullback Santino Alteri should have more of an offensive impact if the young offensive line jells.

Alteri, who led the team in tackles as a sophomore, is the linchpin of a quick, attacking defense. R. J. Ingerson is the only returning lineman from last season, so he will be the leader of the "heavys." Veteran Tom Lazore should also make an impact on both sides of the line.

IHC doesn't have much overall size (only four players more than 200 pounds), but will rely on quickness off the ball on both sides of the line.
