SYRACUSE — Watertown High School's 2010 football debut couldn't have gone much better.

The Cyclones received 200 rushing yards and four touchdowns from senior tailback Tevion Cappe as WHS crushed Cortland 55-26 in a Class A nonleague game Friday night as part of the Kickoff Classic at the Carrier Dome.

After falling behind 6-0 early in the first quarter, WHS rolled past the Purple Tigers for one of their most impressive victories in years.

And Cappe was the catalyst.

"The first few carries, he started slow," Watertown coach Vince Williams said. "All of a sudden by the fifth carry, he started turning it on. He finally woke up and our offensive line did a great job."

He began his night with a 4-yard touchdown run in the first quarter. In the second quarter, Cappe scored on runs of 43, 55 and 1 yard as WHS built a 35-18 halftime lead.

Watertown's other scores came on a 7-yard pass from Tyler Augliano to Caleb Bettis in the first quarter, a 73-yard Augliano-to-Bettis pass and run play in the fourth quarter, a 8-yard TD pass from Augliano to Dustin Pond in the fourth quarter and a 63-yard scamper by sophomore tailback Diamond Williams, also in the fourth quarter.

Augliano also booted five extra points and combined with the 6-foot-5 Pond on a 2-point conversion pass.

For Cappe, it was a brilliant start to what he hopes is a spectacular season.

"We were kind of shaken up because of all of our injuries,'' Cappe said. "But we actually played pretty good today.''
