CANTON — Stephanie Sayward scored the only goal of the game in the 55th minute to give the St. Lawrence University women's soccer team a 1-0 win over SUNY Geneseo in the North Country Classic on Saturday.
Sayward connected off a pass from Erika Gobeille to help the Saints finish 2-0 in the opening-weekend event. Abby van Geldern made nine saves to shut out SUNY Geneseo (1-1).
LASELL 3, CLARKSON 1
Jordynn Frollo scored one goal and assisted on another to send Lasell (1-1) past the Golden Knights in the other North Country Classic game in Canton. Courtney Callanan and Jamie Harris also scored for Lasell. Marissa Cook scored for the Golden Knights (1-2).
SUNY POTSDAM 7, HILBERT 0
Kathleen Freer and Ashley Thayer each scored two goals to lead the Bears (1-0) past Hilbert in the Alfred Tournament.
Jess Mehm scored one goal with two assists and Taylor Jordan added one goal and one assist for the Bears. Heather Johnson also scored for SUNY Potsdam and Caitlin Titus made five saves for the shutout.

SUNY OLD WESTBURY 1
Potsdam native Kaila Maguire scored three goals and added two assists to lead the Golden Eagles to a big win over Old Westbury at the St. John Fisher Invitational Tournament in Pittsford.
Maguire assisted on the games first two goals, then scored three in a span of 17 minutes for Brockport (1-1), who will play St. John Fisher in today's tournament final.

Kelly Waskiewicz scored two goals to lead the Wildcats past SUNY Canton (0-2) in a semifinal game of the D'Youville College Tournament in Buffalo. SUNY Canton will play Cazenovia at noon today.

Brianna Guarino scored three goals and assisted on another to help guide the Cannoneers to a season-opening victory at JCC.
Alicia Uhlein recorded two assists, and Zana Gervaise made three saves for Jefferson.

Sam DeMello scored in the 60th minute to give SLU a win over Houghton in the Lotto Classic at Clarkson. The Saints finished 2-0 in the tournament.
Brian Abernethy made one save to shut out Houghton (2-3).

Mark Secko scored in the 92nd minute to give the Golden Knights (1-1) an overtime win over Roberts Wesleyan in the Lotto Classic. Christopher Bates also scored for Clarkson.
Zach Swan tied the game for Roberts Wesleyan (1-3) in the 62nd minute.

Brandon Dombrowski made four saves to help host Scranton shut out the Bears (0-1) in a nonconference game.
Michael Drew, Patrick Daley, Bryan Spiegelhoff and Bill McGuiness scored for Scranton (2-0).

Brennan Dooling scored on a corner kick in the 103rd minute to give host Daemen and overtime win over the Kangarooes in the season opener for each team in Amherst. Jason Hartman made two saves for Daemen while SUNY Canton's Homero Flores finished with 14.

Goalie Brandon Davis made 8 saves as the host Cannoneers (1-0-1) and the Raiders (1-0-1) played to a scoreless tie in a Region 3 contest.
Cannoneers defenders Connor Taylor and Michael Bombord helped Davis earn the shutout. The Raiders outshot JCC, 7-5.
FIELD HOCKEY
ONEONTA STATE 3, ST. LAWRENCE 2
Ainsley Stoll scored an unassisted goal in the 76th minute to give SUNY Oneonta a win over the Saints in the SLU Tournament.
Stoll also scored the first goal of the game for SUNY Oneonta (1-0). The Saints (0-1) took a 2-1 lead after a pair of goals from Taylor Vogt, but Stephanie Fiske tied the game with a goal in the 57th minute.

CLARKSON FINISHES SECOND
Alex Benway finished third overall to help lead the Clarkson men's team to a second-place finish at the SUNY Plattsburgh Invitational. The Cardinals won both the men's and women's events. Catherine Zarnofsky led the Clarkson women with an eighth-place finish.
VOLLEYBALL
SAINTS FINISH 2-2
St. Lawrence University recovered from a 23-25, 25-20, 25-20, 25-22 loss to Nazareth in its first game to defeat Vassar 20-25, 25-21, 22-25, 25-22, 15-13, finishing the SUNY Cortland Invitational with a 2-2 record.
Liz Grogan had nine kills against Nazareth and Nyasha Miller had 16 to lead the team against Vassar.
SUNY Potsdam was also in the tournament and finished 1-3. The Bears opened the second day with a 25-12, 23-25, 25-16, 25-22 win over Baptist Bible but lost 20-25, 26-24, 25-23, 17-25, 15-12 to Buffalo State in their second game.
Annie Smith had 18 kills and Anne Fildes added eight in the win over Baptist Bible.
CLARKSON SWEEPS
The Golden Knights started off the Hartwick Tournament with a pair of wins, sweeping Kean College 25-10, 25-21, 25-14 then beating host Hartwick 25-9, 25-14, 25-6.
Sara Artus had 13 kills in the opening game and added 16 more in the win over Hartwick.
CANNONEERS SWEPT IN OPENER
Anna Jane Kirch contributed 11 kills, 12 digs, two service aces and three blocked shots, but the Cannoneers (0-2) dropped a season-opening Midstate Conference triangular match at Corning CC.
Tompkins-Cortland defeated JCC, 26-24, 25-16, 25-18, and Corning CC defeated JCC, 25-18, 25-15, 25-18.
Marie Rohde had six kills, six digs and two digs, whlie Tiffany Hickman had 17 assists, 10 digs and four kills for the Cannoneers.
