CARTHAGE — Blanche E. Hammill, 80, of 310 S. James St., Carthage, died September 5, 2010 at her home where she was under the care of her family and Hospice of Jefferson County.

Calling hours will be Thursday Sept. 9th 11:00 am until 12:30 p.m. at the Bruce Funeral Home, Black River. A prayer service will begin at 12:30 pm at the funeral home.

The funeral mass will follow at 1:30 pm Thursday at St. James Catholic Church. Burial will follow in the St. James Cemetery.

Born January 26, 1930 in Champion, NY, daughter of Kenneth M. and Emma J. Burke Gaines, she graduated from Copenhagen High School in 1947.

She married Lawrence Charles Hammill on June 12, 1949 at Holy Family Church. Mr. Hammill passed November 17, 1990

Mrs. Hammill was a homemaker before going to work at Fort Drum, as a manager, for the cafeteria's and mess hall's for 25 years. She then became the site manager at the Carthage High Rise up until July 2010.

Mrs. Hammill was a member of the Red Hat Society, St. James Catholic Church, active in the Senior Citizen Club, and enjoyed playing cards at Brady Acres.

Among her survivors are a son, Gary Hammill, Carthage; two daughters, Christine Hammill, Carthage, Emma Cabaniss, TX; two sisters and a brother in law, Lorraine and Andrew Ploof, St. Lois, MO, Anna Harper, Watertown; two half-brothers, Kenny and Ronnie Gaines both of Copenhagen; 7 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.

An infant son, Marty Joseph Hammill died in 1962 and several brothers and sisters died before her.
