FORT DRUM — A former brigade commander at Fort Drum has been selected to lead the 10th Mountain Division.

Maj. Gen. Mark A. Milley, who led the 10th Mountain Division’s 2nd Brigade Combat Team to Afghanistan in 2003 and Iraq in 2004, will take over Maj. Gen. James L. Terry’s job, the Department of Defense announced Thursday.

Gen. Milley is currently the deputy director for operations, for the Joint Staff, in Washington D.C. A start date has not been announced.

In addition to leading the division, Gen. Terry currently commands NATO’s Regional Command South in Afghanistan with the division’s headquarters battalion, which is expected to come home this fall. He has been nominated to be promoted to the rank of lieutenant general and to command V Corps, U.S. Army Europe and Seventh Army.
