10th Mountain Division sergeant killed by small-arms fire

FORT DRUM — A 10th Mountain Division soldier was killed by small-arms fire Wednesday in Afghanistan.

Sgt. Andrew R. Tobin, 24, Jacksonville, Ill., was an infantryman with the 2nd Battalion, 87th Infantry Regiment and had served a 2009 deployment to Afghanistan.

In addition to Combat Infantry and Air Assault badges, Sgt. Tobin had earned numerous awards for his achievement, conduct and overseas service.

Survivors include his wife and father.

Sgt. Tobin is the 17th soldier to die in the brigade’s yearlong deployment.

The brigade is expected home in March.
