FORT DRUM — The lives of two American heroes were honored Thursday during a remembrance ceremony at the chapel on post.

Staff Sgt. Nathan L. Wyrick, a supply specialist with the 1st Battalion, 32nd Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, and Spc. Jeremiah T. Sancho, an Infantryman with the 3rd Squadron, 71st Cavalry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, were killed by improvised explosive devices in October while deployed to Afghanistan.

Col. Christopher D. Latchford, commander of the 28th Combat Aviation Brigade, spoke of the dedication and bravery the two exemplified.

“These brave men had courage, for they placed country before their own life and a solemn decision committed to preserving the rights of mankind,” he said. “Leaving the comforts of safety of loved ones and trust with a hard and noble purpose, for Nathan and Jeremiah their honor does not end with their death. But instead, honor becomes their eternal legacy.”

Brothers in arms returned home from Afghanistan to help honor that legacy.

Staff Sgt. Bradley R. Hollingsead, 3rd Battalion, 71st Calvary Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, spoke about Spc. Sancho.

“I once heard it said that the greatest comment a soldier could give another soldier is for them to be a good soldier,” Sgt. Hollingsead said. “Spc. Sancho was a good soldier. Giving one’s life for the country is the highest act of patriotism possible. Spc. Jeremiah T. Sancho was a true patriot.”

Sgt. 1st Class Patrick Veith, 1st Battalion, 32nd infantry 3rd Brigade Combat Team, called Sgt. Wyrick a funny, dedicated and professional soldier. “His smile and his sense of humor were infectious,” Sgt. Veith said. “He is a man that made an impact on anyone he came in contact with. I will say this, it was an honor to serve with Sgt. Wyrick. He will never be forgotten. He is a true American hero.”
