FORT DRUM — A departing general was praised for his efforts in maintaining troop readiness and engaging the community around the base.

More than 200 soldiers and community members attended a ceremony Tuesday afternoon to bid farewell to Brig. Gen. Harry E. Miller Jr., the special assistant to the commanding general of the 10th Mountain Division and Fort Drum.

Members of the New Hampshire National Guard, of which Gen. Miller is an active member, attended the ceremony.

From October 2010 until October 2011, Gen. Miller served as the base’s and division’s rear senior commander.

Gen. Miller said his time at Fort Drum was one of the most satisfying experiences of his more than 30-year career.

Fort Drum’s commander, Maj. Gen. Mark A. Milley, said Gen. Miller’s “even-keeled” leadership style was critical in creating a smooth transition for returning forces. He also commended Gen. Miller for his ability to juggle responsibilities that usually were assigned to several people.

Because Gen. Miller was in a role used mainly during unit deployments, there was no indication of a successor being named for his position. Gen. Miller’s next assignment has not been determined.
