Beaver River sweeps Sandy Creek

BEAVER FALLS — Madison Compton accumulated 14 service points, nine aces, six kills and eight digs to spark top-seeded Beaver River to a 25-19, 25-19, 25-21 Section 3 Class C-2 quarterfinal volleyball victory over No. 9 Sandy Creek.

Megan Bush distributed 10 assists, and Samantha Hawksley supplied eight points and 12 digs. Tamara Fidler chipped in with 11 points and six kills, and Cristen Davis contributed five kills, eight assists and five digs for Beaver River (18-0), which advances to play No. 4 Morrisville-Eaton in the semifinals next week.

For the Comets, Stephanie Ennist recorded six kills and nine digs. Kylee Hanni finished with five aces, four kills and three blocks, and Kylee Martin handed out 15 assists for Sandy Creek (7-10).

GIRLS BASKETBALL

INDIAN RIVER 48, WATERTOWN 40

Katie Brierton led the Warriors with 18 points as they beat the Cyclones in an “A” Division consolation game at Philadelphia.

Paige Fayette and Kaitlyn Rajner each had 11 points for Indian River (11-7).

Katie Aldrich paced Watertown (7-11) with 13 points.

GENERAL BROWN 50, COPENHAGEN 42

Rhea Pitkin and Nikki Maier both had 10 points as the Lions downed the Golden Knights in a nonleague game at Copenhagen.

Hope VanBrocklin added nine points, 10 rebounds and five steals for General Brown (9-9).

Rachel Muncy netted 12 points for Copenhagen (9-9).

BOYS BASKETBALL

SOUTH LEWIS 65, ALEXANDRIA 45

Jason Martin had 16 points, nine assists and five steals as the Falcons rolled to a nonleague upset over the Purple Ghosts in Turin.

Shawn Loomis chipped in with 15 points for South Lewis (7-11).

Nick Speach led all scorers with 20 points for Alexandria (14-4).

HOCKEY

SALMON RIVER 3, PELHAM 3

Adam Bomberry and Zachary Dunn each scored for Salmon River in the first round of the Massena Tournament in Massena. Matt Healy made 24 saves for the Shamrocks.

ST. JOSEPH’S 6, MASSENA 1

St. Joseph’s of Buffalo rolled to victory over tournament host Massena in the other first round game. Tyler Lashomb scored for Massena.

ST. LAWRENCE 4, TUPPER LAKE 2

Zack Arquiett supplied a goal and an assist as St. Lawrence doubled up on host Tupper Lake. Blake Baldwin, Ian Lynch and Parker Meashaw each added a goal for the Larries.

Broyce Guerrette and John Bujold each scored for Tupper Lake.
