New-look Privateers suffer first loss

DANBURY, Conn. — James Sanford had a goal and two assists as the Danbury Whalers beat the 1000 Islands Privateers, 6-3, in a Federal Hockey League game at the Danbury Ice Arena on Saturday.

Five Danbury players had a goal an assist against the Privateers, who lost for the first time since last week’s roster shakeup.

Four of the goals came in the second period as Danbury (20-18) built an insurmountable lead.

Peter Vetri made 39 saves in net for the Whalers.

Paul Kelly, who was named team captain earlier in the day, scored a power-play goal for 1000 Islands (29-10-2).

Tibor Varga and Bill Newson also had markers for the Privateers.

Goalie Peter Dundovich stopped 36 shots for 1000 Islands.

Holdovers Brad Smulders, who had an assist, and Adam McAllister were named assistant captains on Saturday.

The Privateers will take on the first-place New Jersey Outlaws today at 4:35 p.m. at Capital One Ice Vault in Wayne, N.J.
