In recent weeks, David P. Bartlett had hoped to find someone to take over Bistro 108 or find a new investor to keep the downtown restaurant open.

When those efforts failed to yield results, Mr. Bartlett decided to close the restaurant and bar at 108 Court St., citing the debt that had accumulated since he took over the former First National Beef & Brew two years ago.

“It’s just time to cut our losses,” he said, adding that back rent and high utility bills were just too much to overcome.

Feb. 4 was the last night for serving food at the restaurant, which employs five people. Since then, Mr. Bartlett had tried to find an investor or others who would run the bistro, known for its prime rib dinners and Italian entrees and live music on weekends.

Mr. Bartlett decided it was time to concentrate on his other restaurant, Johnny D’s Casual Dining, which he runs in the Paddock Arcade with his wife, Robyn L. Johnny D’s Casual Dining “does a good business” for breakfasts and lunches, Mr. Bartlett said.

It was hard for Bistro 108 to compete against the many franchise restaurants along Arsenal Street, Mr. Bartlett said. And downtown Watertown is geared toward more of a lunch crowd of commuters who work in the central business district and then head home after 5 p.m., he said.

Mr. Bartlett said he will continue to run a traveling food vending business, Johnny D’s on the Run, at the Greater Watertown-North Country Chamber of Commerce’s Farm and Craft Market on Wednesdays from May to October, and at area festivals and other outdoor events. He also plans to expand the couple’s catering business.

Mr. Bartlett thanked his landlord, Donald G.M. Coon III, managing partner in Watertown RX LLC, for “going way above” in the effort to keep Bistro 108 afloat.

“It’s unfortunate. Dave has worked hard over there,” Mr. Coon said, adding that he is working with another party to reopen the restaurant.

“I should know what happens this week,” Mr. Coon said.
