The Transportation Security Administration says that it does not perform strip searches.

Yet an elderly woman has complained about security officials at New York City’s Kennedy Airport doing just that. Disabled travelers and others have complained about screening procedures at the airport as well.

That is why Sen. Charles Schumer, D-N.Y., is proposing legislation to require “passenger advocates” at airports to help elderly, disabled and other needy travelers.

The TSA counters that it has a hotline and customer service managers to help passengers in distress. Apparently, these services are not enough.

Elderly and disabled people should not have to check their dignity at the airport screening area as part of the cost of flying.

Sen. Schumer’s idea should be considered.
